Ryan’s Well Foundation Helps HAS Bring Clean Water, Latrines and Hygiene Education to Three Schools
A longtime supporter of HAS, Ryan’s Well Foundation this year funded the repair of three wells, construction of three school latrines, and sanitation and hygiene education in the schools and surrounding communities. The three repaired wells provide potable water to more than 1,150 people.
Given the current drought in Haiti, the dry season has been longer than usual this year; therefore, access to these functioning wells is more important than ever. HAS monitors the wells’ function once a month, and works with community members to ensure that any needed repairs are made.
The three new school latrine stations each have eight stances, with three for boys, three for girls, and two for staff. Each facility includes a hand-washing station with eight taps.
For each of the three schools, HAS been able to provide onsite school training sessions for educators on the importance of clean water, sanitation and hygiene to good health, providing instruction, for example, on proper hand-washing techniques. A central committee from each school, composed of two representatives per class, has participated in the training to help ensure that school personnel collaborate on education and sanitation system maintenance.
We are most grateful for the support of Ryan’s Well Foundation, an important partner in our effort to improve public health in Haiti.
