Haiti is poor in material terms, but Haitians are rich in their spirit and their courage. In the past year alone, they have endured a horrendous earthquake, floods in our region and a deadly cholera epidemic. Despite this, they never give up. Therefore never can we. We draw strength from their forbearance and resilience. Every day we learn again about the reservoirs of strength which come from hope.
Today at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS), we pause to reflect and to honor what Haitians have lost. We also celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments at HAS this past year: thousands of life saving surgeries; thousands treated for cholera; tens of thousands of displaced persons served; attending to the health and well being of hundreds of thousands simply as part of our daily work.
As we emerge from one of the most difficult times in Haiti’s history, the importance of HAS as an institution has never been higher.
Hope is rising at HAS. We feel a strong sense of hope for the future and all that can be accomplished for our neighbors. The hard work must continue. Support on all fronts will be the key to keep up with new challenges. Please help.
