On June 26, 1956, Dr. Larry Mellon dedicated his birthday to officially opening Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS) for service. The day marked not just an observance of another year of life, but a celebration of a decision to live a life of service to others.
It’s been 59 years since this first birthday dedication, and much has changed. Today HAS is regarded as an international role model for providing smart healthcare in a challenged setting. Diseases such as tetanus, measles and diphtheria have been virtually eliminated from our service territory, and the hospital is a significant economic engine for the communities it serves, with a 99% Hatian staff. We also serve a larger population than ever before – more than 350,000.
Despite all these changes, one thing has remained constant: the spirit of compassion that drove Larry and Gwen Mellon to devote their lives to providing professional, modern healthcare for those in need.
We frequently hear from supporters who are inspired by Dr. Mellon to take action in whatever way that they can. How can you take action?
The answer is simple: Fundraise for our greatest needs. Please consider dedicating your birthday, as Dr. Mellon did, to support the mission of HAS.
A birthday dedication for HAS is a chance to expand access to quality healthcare in Haiti. All you need is a computer and your network of friends and family. Your campaign spreads awareness, one of the most powerful tools.
