As we approach the end of 2017, we asked a few key staff members to reflect on what they were most proud of this year, and what they hope HAS can accomplish in 2018.
The final interview in our series this year is with Dr. Herriot Sannon, HAS Medical Director.
“It has been a rewarding year for our medical staff at HAS. We have saved many lives and been there for patients who had nowhere else to turn.
Thanks to generous donors like you, we were able to hire a full-time psychologist, which is very important for our patients who need support for mental health issues, and those who have problems stemming from chronic pain or disease.
Dr. St Fleur joined our medical team as a Family Medicine physician. She is an exceptional “team player” and has alleviated some of the pressure from increasing volumes of patients in our observation ward. In the past, the nurse would have to find a doctor from another department, but now Dr. St Fleur is present and attending to the needs of the patients throughout the week.
We were also able to add Dr. Sainvil, an OB/GYN, for weekend care. That means we are now one of the few hospitals in Haiti offering 24/7 OBYGYN coverage.”
“In 2018, we hope to increase the capacity of the hospital in several ways. An ultrasound technician would be hugely helpful, as we currently have to send patients to Port-au-Prince for ultrasounds. We would like to put an electronic medical record system in place and have urgent needs to improve HAS’s IT infrastructure. I’d also hope for more training and continuing education for our dedicated staff.”
