The “Rice Basket” of Haiti

One of the most important sectors of the Haitian economy is agriculture. According to the World Bank, economic growth in Haiti has been rising in the past few years, a trend which has been mainly attributed to a pick-up in agricultural production.

Agriculture is a crucial part of the economy in the rural Lower Artibonite Valley, where HAS is located. The region is known as the “rice basket” of Haiti because of the large quantities of rice produced in the fertile valley region. Many of our patients depend upon the income they generate from selling their crops to feed and care for their families.
