HAS recently trained 27 new traditional birth attendants (TBAs) (known here as matrones): men and women who assist women to make their home births safer. Dr. Edwige Pierre, HAS Chief of Medical Services for Integrated Community Services, conducted the 3-week training. He says, “These birth attendants had no training before this, and now they all have the basic knowledge to provide better service and advise women.” HAS has now trained over 300 matrones in the area, who collaborate with us to help reduce maternal mortality in the area by working with community health workers to ensure that women get the care that they need before, during, and after pregnancy.
