Transforming the Health of Hard-to-Reach Populations

We are pleased to share that, out of thousands of nonprofits around the world, Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti been recognized as one of nine community health pioneers transforming health for neglected populations.

The Center for High Impact Philanthropy (CHIP) at the University of Pennsylvania profiles HAS in its recently released guide, Community-Based Approaches to Health: How Engaging Local Community Members Can Transform the Health of Hard-to-Reach Populations.

Pointing to HAS’ effectiveness, the authors say, “HAS has increased access to and uptake of proven interventions, such as childhood vaccines, treatment for childhood diarrhea, prenatal visits, assisted births, and contraception. According to a HAS study, as a result of this increased access, death rates in children younger than age 5 were 58% lower in the HAS system, as compared to similar areas of rural Haiti.”

The report is intended as a donor toolkit, showing how philanthropy can help improve the health of communities. At HAS, donations are vital in providing not only quality health services – but also water, electricity, and transportation for hospital operations.
